Learning to drive is an exciting milestone, and understanding the process makes the journey much smoother. Here’s a clear guide to help you begin driving lessons and work toward your full licence in 2026.
Your first step is passing the theory test. It covers road signs, rules, and essential driving knowledge. The test costs around €45 and can be booked through the RSA website.
Once you pass, you can apply for your learner permit. You must display L plates and be accompanied by a fully licensed driver whenever you’re behind the wheel.
Select an RSA approved driving instructor (ADI). Look at reviews, compare lesson packages, and decide whether you want to learn in a manual or automatic car.
All new drivers must complete 12 Essential Driver Training (EDT) lessons. These sessions cover key driving skills and real world scenarios to help you become a safe and confident driver.
The more time you spend driving, the better. Practise with a qualified driver to reinforce what you’ve learned during your EDT lessons.
When you feel ready, book your driving test. Many learners find pre test lessons helpful for fine tuning their skills and becoming familiar with common test routes.
