If you’re planning to start driving in Ireland in 2026, your first milestone is the Driver Theory Test. With the right preparation and a clear study plan, passing on your first attempt is absolutely achievable.
Your main study resource is the RSA’s Rules of the Road. It explains everything from road signs and markings to safe driving habits. Spend extra time on sections you find challenging and revisit them regularly until you feel confident.
The RSA provides official practice materials, including mock tests and study aids. There are also apps and websites offering quizzes and sample questions to help reinforce your knowledge.
Mock exams are one of the best ways to prepare. They help you get used to the question style, identify weak areas, and build confidence before the real test.
You can book your theory test online through the RSA website. Choose a test centre that’s convenient for you and select a date that gives you enough time to prepare.
Arrive early with your required ID and proof of payment. You’ll also be asked to sign a declaration confirming that you prepared independently.
The test consists of 40 questions and lasts 45 minutes. Read each question carefully, manage your time, and take a moment to breathe if you feel nervous.
You’ll receive a pass certificate that remains valid for two years. Keep it safe, you’ll need it when applying for your learner permit.
Once you’ve passed, you can apply for your learner permit and begin lessons. This is the start of your journey toward becoming a fully licensed driver.
